Eyelid Surgery Boston - Blepharoplasty Wellesley
The eyes are the first thing noticed when we meet someone new. Beautiful eyes can make up for other features that are less than ideal. Likewise, eyes that are tired, droopy, or swollen may not reflect a vibrant inner self. It is often said that the earliest signs of aging are around the eyes. You may feel that the eyes looking back at you in the mirror every morning are old and tired looking, or maybe people are always questioning whether or not you had a good night’s sleep because your eyes are swollen with bags.
At Accurate Aesthetics Plastic Surgery, we carefully look to see what part of the eyelid area is a problem and formulate a specific plan to address this. If just the crow’s feet (on the side of the eyelid area) are a problem, then BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, fractional CO2 laser resurfacing or the simple Eyes by Thermage nonsurgical procedure may be the right thing for you. BOTOX® Cosmetic can also raise the lateral portion of the eyebrow giving a more youthful appearance. If there are just hollows under the eyes then hyaluronic acid filler injections such as Juvederm® Ultra may be the solution along with certain skin products containing hydroquinone that may reduce the dark circles. Long, dark, thick eyelashes are a sign of youthfulness. Enhancing the eyelashes with a product such as Latisse or Neova Advanced Eyelash Conditioner will always improve the natural appearance of the eye and mask the signs of aging.
Cosmetic eyelid surgery can give you dramatically younger eyes through “eyelid lifts”, also known as blepharoplasty. A primary reason for droopy eyelids is simply due to age. As gravity pulls down on everything, it also affects the eyebrows. As the outer parts of the eyebrows droop, the skin of the upper eyelids will look saggy, as if you had developed extra skin that was not there several years before. Trimming this “extra” skin can drastically improve that droopy look.
The Surgery
Eyelid surgery may be performed under local or sedation anesthesia in our private fully certified outpatient surgical facility. If sedation anesthesia is needed (most common for the lower lids), it will be administered by a board certified anesthesiologist. Dr. LoVerme will make tiny incisions along the natural lines of your eyelids, through which excess fat, skin and muscle are removed. The incisions are closed with fine sutures, which will leave scars that most often are practically invisible.
Most patients are back to their normal routines within a week and exercise within two weeks, although complete recovery may take several months. Swelling, bruising, and some discomfort are part of the recovery process. Ice packs are the most important thing you can do after surgery. We ask that you keep ice compresses on as much as possible for at least the first 48 hours after surgery. You will not be able to drive for 3 to 5 days due to some swelling of the lids. You will generally need to return to office at 5 to 7 for removal of sutures. Makeup may be applied by day 6 after the surgery and contacts may be worn by ten days after surgery (sooner if you only need surgery on the upper lid).
OTHER OPTIONS
Sometimes eyelid lifts are combined with other procedures called endoscopic eyebrow and forehead lifts to improve the height and maintain the contour of the upper eyebrow. Muscles may be removed from the glabella (frown line area) through the eyelid incision to minimize the need for future BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments in that area. Facelift surgery or laser resurfacing may be done at the same time with almost no extension of the healing time. Dr. LoVerme will discuss whether you might benefit from these combined procedures during your initial consultation.
If you are unhappy with the way you look in the morning and attribute it mainly to your tired eyes, we encourage you to call our office today and set up an appointment with Dr. LoVerme. He will determine if you are a good candidate for the eyelid enhancement. Call today (781) 263-0011. Please remember that a complimentary consultation with our medical aesthetician is included with any surgical procedure.
